Most people wonder what is required in order to have a sufficient classroom or home library...I, however, think it is quite obvious that in order for children to thrive in reading abilities, we must expose them to literature of all kinds and types as much and as often as possible. I think that children should read labels, tags, recipes, books, magazines, newspapers, horoscopes, instructions, road signs, maps, textbooks, packaging of school supplies, internet ads and sites. Basically, anything that has letters and provides meaning, could be used to enrich the literacy environment of a child. I think children also thrive in literacy when they are able to see people surrounding them taking part in reading and being read to. Modeling how and when and why we read is proven to be a factor in how a child views reading and the act of reading. As teachers, we must make absolutely certain that our children see positive role models in us and how we view literature. We should take every chance to point out words to our students and actively sound them out and pronounce them. It's imperative to their learning.

  1. Christina, I totally agree about using anything and everything to teach reading. Those road signs, newspapers, school supply packages, the Internet-those are all authentic chances to teach reading. It occurred to me as I was reading your post that as adults we do SO MUCH of our day-to-day "real-life" reading now on the computer/smartphones/e-readers (e-mail, news articles, e-books)...I wish our elementary school classrooms could catch up technology-wise so our students could have digital print experiences as well as the "real" print experiences...

  2. I completely agree that literature and words need to be everywhere possible. In my classroom there are words everywhere. In pre-k we are encouraged to create a print-rich environment around us and the students. In my reading center there are all kinds of books. Recipe books in home life, maps in blocks, etc. I definitely need to look into finding some magazines to put into the centers too!

  3. In our society today there is text everywhere. If parents are made aware of the learning they can be fostering simply by calling the child's attention to this text and reading it what a help it would be.Recently i found myself judging the quality of what a child was reading. After some reflection I thought "the important thing is to read". Encourage a child to read everything he sees.
